Col Margherita (2,513 m)
Reached by a gondola from nearby Falcade or by a summer hiking trail from the Passo San Pellegrino above Moena, Col Margherita delivers a full-circle panorama that takes in the Marmolada glacier, the Pale di San Martino, and the jagged silhouette of the Catinaccio — all from a single grassy summit.
Getting to the Top
The Passo San Pellegrino (1,918 m) sits just 8 km above Moena and is the jumping-off point for Col Margherita. In summer the road is open to cars and cyclists; from the pass a signed trail (about 1.5 hours, moderate difficulty) winds up through alpine meadows thick with gentians and arnica to the summit cross.
The Rifugio Col Margherita at the top serves hearty Ladin cuisine — try the canederli in brodo (bread dumplings in broth) — and has a sun terrace that is essentially a front-row seat to the entire western Dolomites.
Sunrise and the Marmolada
Serious photographers book a bed at the rifugio to catch sunrise, when the Marmolada glacier — the 'Queen of the Dolomites' at 3,343 m — catches the first orange light while the valleys below are still ink-dark. It is one of the most dramatic light shows in the Alps.
In winter Col Margherita sits inside the Ski Area San Pellegrino–Falcade, so the same panorama is available to skiers and snowboarders riding the Margherita chairlift.
