Osteria Il Pozzo

Tucked into a narrow medieval lane just off Piazza Garibaldi, Osteria Il Pozzo is the kind of place where the handwritten menu changes with the market and the owner will tell you off, gently, if you order the fish when the lake catch was poor that morning. This is where locals eat, not tourists.

What to Order

The kitchen leans hard into Lombard tradition: expect missoltini (sun-dried agone fish from the lake, served with polenta), risotto al pesce persico (perch risotto finished with local butter), and slow-braised rabbit with sage when the season allows. The house wine is an unlabelled Valtellina red poured from a ceramic jug — order it without hesitation.

In autumn, the menu pivots to porcini mushrooms sourced from the hills above Menaggio, appearing in pasta, risotto and as a simple grilled contorno. The chestnut dessert, when available, is worth leaving room for.

Atmosphere & Practicalities

The dining room holds perhaps 30 covers across stone-walled, low-ceilinged rooms that feel genuinely old — because they are, the building dating to the 17th century. Service is unhurried in the Italian sense: plan for a two-hour lunch rather than a quick bite.

Reservations are essential on weekends and during July and August. The osteria is closed on Tuesdays. Budget roughly €30–40 per person with wine, which is exceptional value for the quality on this stretch of the lake.
