Every Thursday morning, Menaggio's lakeside streets transform into a lively open-air market that draws villagers from across the western shore — a vivid, unhurried slice of Lombard daily life that most lake-hoppers miss entirely. Come hungry and bring a canvas bag.
What You'll Find
Stalls spread along Via Calvi and into the side streets off Piazza Garibaldi from around 8 a.m., selling seasonal produce — fat bunches of asparagus in spring, figs and porcini in autumn — alongside wheels of local formaggi, cured bresaola from Valtellina and freshly baked michette rolls. A handful of vendors sell Como silk scarves, linen and household goods at prices well below the boutiques of Bellagio.
Look out for the elderly cheese seller who brings pecorino and aged goat's cheese down from the hills above Grandola; her stall is usually near the pharmacy on Via Calvi and sells out by 10 a.m.
How to Make a Morning of It
Pair the market with breakfast at one of the bars on Piazza Garibaldi — a cornetto and a macchiato cost under €3 and you can watch the stalls being assembled. After shopping, the park benches along the promenade are perfect for an impromptu picnic with your purchases.
The market wraps up by noon, so plan to arrive before 9:30 a.m. to catch the best selection. Thursday is also a good day to book a ferry trip to Varenna or Bellagio, as the morning market crowd keeps the afternoon boats quieter.
