Lido di Menaggio
While day-trippers queue for overpriced sunbeds in Bellagio, Menaggio's own public lido sits a ten-minute walk south of the ferry pier — a proper 1930s bathing establishment with a 50-metre outdoor pool, diving boards, a grassy lawn and direct lake access that feels like a forgotten postcard from another era.
The Facilities
The lido was built in 1936 and retains its original Art Deco entrance pavilion and tiled changing rooms. Entry gives you access to both the freshwater pool and a cordoned lake-swimming area with a floating pontoon — the lake water here is clean, cool and startlingly clear, with visibility down to several metres on calm days.
Sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented for around €5 each, and a small bar serves cold drinks, panini and gelato. It's genuinely family-friendly, with a shallow paddling section and lifeguards on duty throughout opening hours.
Why It's Worth Choosing Over Bellagio
The lido is almost entirely used by Italian families and local teenagers rather than international tourists, which means the atmosphere is relaxed and the prices are honest. On a weekday in July you can usually find a spot on the grass without pre-booking — something impossible at the more famous lake beaches.
The walk south along the promenade from Piazza Garibaldi to the lido entrance is itself scenic, passing a small children's playground and a stretch of shaded waterfront path. It's a complete half-day without needing a car or a ferry.
