Musée de la Grande Guerre du Pays de Meaux
Opened in 2011 on the very fields where the Battle of the Marne turned the tide of World War One, this striking contemporary museum holds one of the largest collections of Great War artefacts in the world. Over 50,000 objects — uniforms, weapons, letters, propaganda posters — tell the human story of 1914–1918 with rare emotional honesty.
The Collection
The permanent galleries walk you chronologically from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand through the Armistice, using life-size reconstructed trenches, original artillery pieces and thousands of personal objects donated by veterans' families.
Standout pieces include a near-complete German Albatros fighter plane suspended from the ceiling and an extraordinary archive of hand-coloured lantern slides showing the Western Front in vivid, almost surreal detail.
The Memorial Park
Step outside and the museum opens onto a landscaped memorial park stretching across the plateau above the Marne valley, dotted with national monuments erected by the Allied nations — American, British, French and Moroccan troops are all commemorated here.
The park is free to enter at all times, making it a moving place for an early-morning walk before the museum opens, when the silence feels genuinely weighty.
