Marché de Meaux — Place Henri Dunant

Every Saturday morning, the vast covered and open-air market at Place Henri Dunant transforms the heart of Meaux into a sensory carnival of Brie de Meaux wheels, raw-milk cheeses, farm charcuterie, Seine-et-Marne honey and seasonal produce grown in the flat, fertile fields surrounding the city. This is the market that supplies many of Paris's top restaurant kitchens — and it shows.

What to Buy

The undisputed star is Brie de Meaux AOP, sold by several fromageries who wheel out whole 3-kilogram rounds and cut wedges to order — ask for a piece affiné à cœur (ripe to the centre) and prepare to be converted. Look also for Coulommiers, the smaller, creamier cousin made just 30 km east.

Beyond cheese, the market is exceptional for its charcuterie from local farms — rillettes, pâté de campagne and boudin noir made with apples from the Marne valley — as well as wild mushrooms from Fontainebleau forest vendors who arrive with baskets of girolles and cèpes in autumn.

Market Rhythm and Tips

Arrive before 09:00 to beat the crowds and catch the best selection; by 11:30 the most popular fromageries are packing up. The covered halles section runs along Rue du Marché and stays open until 13:00.

Grab a coffee and a warm pain au chocolat from the boulangerie at the market's edge and eat it standing at the counter — this is exactly how locals start their Saturday.
