Les Bords de Marne à Meaux — Riverside Promenade
The Marne river curves around the southern edge of Meaux in a wide, willow-lined arc, and the well-maintained towpath that follows it for several kilometres is one of the most genuinely relaxing escapes in the Paris region — calm, green, free and almost entirely unknown to tourists. On a summer morning you are likely to see herons, kingfishers and cormorants before you see another person.
The Promenade
Starting from the Pont du Marché in the city centre, the paved riverside path heads east past the old mill buildings — some now converted into apartments — and quickly opens into a wide floodplain landscape of poplars, meadows and backwater channels. After about 2 km you reach the Île Saint-Faron, a wooded river island accessible by a small footbridge, perfect for a picnic.
The path continues westward from the city centre as well, passing under the railway viaduct and reaching the pretty lock at Trilbardou after about 6 km — a flat, easy cycle if you hire a bike from the tourist office.
Wildlife and Seasons
The Marne at Meaux is part of a designated natural corridor for migratory birds, and the backwater channels beside the main promenade are a reliable spot for common kingfisher (Martin-pêcheur) sightings — look for the electric blue flash low over the water in the early morning.
In late April and May the riverside meadows are carpeted with wild orchids — particularly the green-winged orchid (Orchis morio) — and the air smells of wild garlic from the shaded woodland sections near the old mill race.
