Parc du Pharo Terrace
The grassy terrace of the Palais du Pharo sits on a rocky promontory at the mouth of the Vieux-Port, offering a wide-angle panorama that sweeps from the Fort Saint-Nicolas on the left to the open Mediterranean on the right — and it is almost entirely overlooked by tourists. This is where Marseillais come to watch the sun go down.
The View & the Setting
Napoleon III built the Palais du Pharo as a seaside residence for Empress Eugénie, though she barely visited. Today the palace hosts conferences, but the park surrounding it is fully public and free. The terrace wall drops almost vertically to the sea below, giving a vertiginous, ship's-prow sensation as you lean over the railing.
At sunset, the Vieux-Port fills with amber light, the masts of moored sailboats create a delicate lattice against the sky, and the silhouette of Notre-Dame de la Garde crowns the hill behind the city. It is one of the finest free views in the whole of France.
Picnicking & Lingering
The sloping lawns are perfect for a picnic assembled from the Noailles market or one of the Vieux-Port fromageries nearby. Locals arrive from late afternoon with bottles of rosé, baguettes and charcuterie and stay until the stars appear — joining them feels entirely natural and warmly welcomed.
There is a small café kiosk in the park open in summer, but bringing your own supplies is the local way. The park has ample benches and flat grass sections suitable for families with young children.
Getting There
The Pharo is a 15-minute flat walk west along the waterfront from the Vieux-Port ferry terminal — follow Quai de Rive Neuve past the Fort Saint-Nicolas and the path leads you straight up to the park entrance. It is also reachable by bus lines 83 and 19.
The park is open every day from dawn until dusk with no admission charge. Evening visits in July and August are particularly magical as the light fades slowly and the city's lights begin to flicker on across the water.
