Marché du Noailles
Tucked behind the Canebière in the Noailles neighbourhood, this open-air and covered market is the most aromatic square kilometre in the city — a sensory riot of North African spices, fresh olives, dried figs and shouted haggling in a dozen languages. Marseillais call Noailles 'le ventre de Marseille', the city's belly.
What to Buy & Eat
Stalls overflow with preserved lemons, harissa in every shade of red, ras el hanout blended to each vendor's secret formula, and mountains of medjool dates sold by the scoop. The olive merchants alone could occupy you for half an hour, offering tastings of picholine, lucques and oil-cured black olives with a generosity that makes buying feel almost obligatory.
For breakfast, duck into one of the Tunisian bakeries on Rue Longue-des-Capucins for a brik — a thin pastry envelope crisped in oil around a runny egg and tuna — eaten standing at the counter for around €2. It is one of the great cheap breakfasts of the Mediterranean world.
The Neighbourhood Around It
Noailles is one of Marseille's most genuinely multicultural quarters, home to long-established Maghrebi, Comorian and Southeast Asian communities. The streets between Rue d'Aubagne and Cours Belsunce are lined with halal butchers, Vietnamese grocery shops and Lebanese pastry counters selling syrup-soaked knafeh by the slab.
Street art covers many of the building facades here — look for the large-scale murals by local collective La Mer à Boire, which celebrate the neighbourhood's layered identity without sanitising it.
Timing Your Visit
The market peaks Tuesday through Sunday from around 08:00 to 13:00; Monday is the quietest day with fewer stalls. Arrive before 10:00 to see the full spread and interact with vendors before the lunchtime rush compresses the alleyways.
The area around Place du Marché des Capucins is the densest cluster of stalls — park yourself here and let the market come to you rather than trying to cover every street systematically.
