Trattoria del Vapore
Tucked just off the lakefront on Via Valsugana, Trattoria del Vapore is the kind of quietly excellent neighbourhood restaurant that regulars guard jealously. The menu is anchored in the cucina del lago tradition: freshwater fish from Como, hand-rolled pasta and a wine list that sticks loyally to Lombardy.
What to Order
Start with missoltini — sun-dried agone fish pressed in salt and bay leaves, a Lake Como speciality so local it barely appears on menus outside the region. They arrive dressed with a thread of local olive oil and a squeeze of lemon, intensely savoury and utterly unlike anything you'll eat elsewhere.
For a main, the risotto al pesce persico (perch risotto) is the benchmark dish: the rice is cooked to a gentle wave — all'onda — and the delicate lake perch fillets are barely kissed by butter. A carafe of Lugana bianco from the southern end of Lake Garda is the obvious pairing.
Atmosphere and Practicalities
The dining room is modest — checked tablecloths, framed black-and-white photos of old Mandello, a hum of Italian conversation — but the terrace has a partial lake view that earns its place on any sunny lunch. It fills quickly on weekends, so a reservation is wise.
Prices are notably lower than comparable restaurants in Varenna or Bellagio, making this an excellent argument for basing yourself in Mandello rather than the more famous lake towns.
