Via dell'Amore Coastal Path
The Via dell'Amore — Path of Love — is a kilometre-long ledge blasted into the sheer cliff face between Manarola and Riomaggiore, suspended above a sea so blue it looks colour-corrected. Reopened in 2024 after a decade of restoration following rockfall damage, it is once again one of the most dramatic short walks in Europe.
The Walk Itself
The path runs roughly north–south, almost entirely flat, cut into the cliff at sea level with the rock face on one side and a low railing between you and a thirty-metre drop to the water on the other. The engineering is extraordinary — tunnels, overhangs and a series of lookout niches punctuate the route.
The entire one-way walk takes about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace, but most people take twice that because the urge to stop and photograph every angle is overwhelming. Morning light hits the Manarola end beautifully; afternoon light favours the Riomaggiore side.
Flora and Wildlife
The cliff vegetation is a textbook example of Ligurian macchia: rosemary, rock samphire, sea lavender and wild fennel grow directly from fissures in the schist. In spring the yellow of broom against the grey rock and blue sea is almost aggressively beautiful.
Peregrine falcons nest in the cliff above the path and are regularly spotted riding thermals over the sea. Swifts scream through the tunnels at dusk. In the water below, snorkellers report clear visibility to eight metres and dense populations of sea urchins and bream.
Access and Booking
Since the 2024 reopening, entry is timed and ticketed to control visitor numbers and protect the restored infrastructure. Tickets must be booked online through the Cinque Terre National Park portal or at the park offices in Riomaggiore and Manarola stations.
The path is one-directional (Riomaggiore to Manarola) during peak season. The Cinque Terre Card (€7.50/day) covers the path; a standalone ticket is €5. Sturdy shoes are recommended though the surface is paved.
