Parque del Retiro
The Parque del Retiro is 350 acres of formal gardens, shaded paths, rose gardens and a rowing lake in the heart of the city — and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 as part of the Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro landscape. On a Sunday morning it is as essential a Madrid experience as any museum.
The Park's Star Attractions
The Estanque Grande, the park's central rowing lake, is dominated by a monumental bronze equestrian statue of King Alfonso XII on a curved colonnade — one of the most photographed spots in Madrid. Hire a rowboat (€6 for 45 minutes) and drift past it for a perspective that postcards rarely show.
The Palacio de Cristal, a stunning iron-and-glass greenhouse built in 1887, now serves as a free contemporary art exhibition space run by the Reina Sofía. Whatever is showing inside is almost secondary to the architecture itself, which floods with light on sunny afternoons.
How to Spend a Morning Here
Enter through the Puerta de Alcalá gate on the north side and walk south through the rose garden (Rosaleda) — in May it holds over 4,000 rose varieties in full bloom and the scent is extraordinary. Continue to the Palacio de Cristal, then loop back via the Estanque for a rowboat session.
Street performers, book sellers and portrait artists set up along the main central promenade on weekends, giving the park a festive, village-fair atmosphere that locals of all ages genuinely participate in — this is not a tourist performance.
