Mercado de San Miguel
A beautifully restored 1916 iron-and-glass market just steps from Plaza Mayor, Mercado de San Miguel is Madrid's most atmospheric place to graze on high-quality pintxos, jamón and vermouth. It is touristy, yes — but the produce is genuinely excellent.
What to Eat and Drink Here
Start with a glass of house vermouth (vermut) at one of the central bar counters — it is the classic Madrid mid-morning ritual and costs around €2.50. Pair it with a gilda: a skewer of olive, anchovy and pickled pepper that packs a serious punch.
The jamón ibérico de bellota stall near the main entrance slices to order; a small portion runs €5–7 and is worth every cent. For something sweet, finish at the churros counter on the east side of the hall.
Timing and Tactics
The market is open daily from 10 am to midnight, but the sweet spot is 11 am–1 pm on weekdays when locals pop in before lunch and the atmosphere is buzzy without being suffocating.
Weekend evenings are packed shoulder-to-shoulder; if you visit then, arrive with patience and no pushchair. Stalls accept card payments universally, which keeps queues moving.
