Tucked into a narrow alley behind the Teatro Real, Chocolatería San Ginés has been serving Madrid's definitive churros con chocolate since 1894 — and it never closes, making it equally perfect for breakfast, a 3 am post-club refuel, or a rainy afternoon pick-me-up.
The Ritual of Churros con Chocolate
San Ginés serves two things: churros (thin, ridged, lightly crisp) and porras (thicker, chewier batons), both accompanied by a small jug of thick, almost pudding-like hot chocolate designed for dipping rather than drinking. Order one of each and share — portions are generous.
The chocolate here is genuinely thick and deeply flavoured; it coats the churro and sets slightly as it cools, which is exactly how Madrid likes it. Do not expect the thin Swiss-style drinking chocolate you might know from elsewhere.
When to Go and What to Expect
The café operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which is both its superpower and its busiest-times challenge. Early morning (8–10 am) and late night (midnight–3 am) are the most atmospheric windows; midday queues can stretch into the alley.
The interior is all green-and-white tiles, dark wood and framed bullfighting posters — it looks almost exactly as it did a century ago. Grab a table inside rather than at the door for the full old-Madrid atmosphere.
