Parc des Hauteurs & the Mur des Canuts

Linking Fourvière to the Croix-Rousse hill via a mostly car-free path through gardens, orchards and pocket vineyards, the Parc des Hauteurs is Lyon's best-kept secret for a morning walk — and almost no tourist guidebook bothers to mention it. Along the way you'll stumble across one of the world's largest trompe-l'oeil murals and a medieval tower with a view that rivals Fourvière itself.

Walking the Hilltop Path

The Parc des Hauteurs trail runs roughly 4 kilometres along Lyon's western ridge, passing through the Jardin du Rosaire (a terraced rose garden tumbling down towards the Saône), a small urban vineyard that still produces a symbolic harvest each autumn, and the Tour Métallique — a 1893 Eiffel-esque iron tower that once served as a TV antenna and now provides a dramatic silhouette against the sky.

The path is almost entirely flat once you reach the ridge, making it a relaxed 90-minute stroll. It's particularly beautiful in May when the Jardin du Rosaire is in full bloom, and again in October when the vineyard vines turn amber and gold.

The Mur des Canuts: A City on a Wall

At the northern end of the walk, descending into the Croix-Rousse neighbourhood, you'll find the Mur des Canuts on Boulevard des Canuts — a 1,200-square-metre trompe-l'oeil fresco painted on the side of an apartment block, depicting a hyper-realistic street scene of Croix-Rousse complete with silk workers, market stalls, cats on balconies and local celebrities rendered in perfect perspective. It's been updated four times since 1987 and is still maintained by the Cité de la Création collective.

Stand about 30 metres back to get the full forced-perspective effect — the painted residents appear to step off the wall into the real street, and the illusion is genuinely disorienting in the best possible way.
