The Musée des Confluences
The Musée des Confluences is the neighbourhood's centrepiece — a deconstructivist building by Vienna's Coop Himmelb(l)au that looks like a crystal cloud balanced on a steel structure, hovering above the riverbank. Inside, the permanent collection spans natural history, anthropology and the history of the universe in a narrative arc that is genuinely ambitious: it opens with the Big Bang and ends with contemporary questions about humanity's future.
The building alone is worth the trip even if museums aren't your thing — the cantilevered 'crystal' section juts 40 metres over the confluence itself, and the view of the two rivers merging from the upper terrace is unlike anything else in the city.
The Docks and the Outdoor Spaces
The surrounding Quartier de la Confluence is built around a network of pedestrian promenades, floating pontoon gardens and former dock warehouses converted into restaurants, concept stores and a covered market hall. The Marché-Gare building, a 1920s Art Deco freight station, now houses a weekend organic market and a string of food stalls that are popular with young Lyonnais families on Saturday afternoons.
Walk to the very tip of the peninsula — the actual point where the two rivers meet — and you'll find a small public park with benches facing the water. It's a genuinely meditative spot, especially on a weekday when the area is quiet, and the industrial heritage of the old port cranes provides an unexpectedly photogenic backdrop.
