Pointe de Gâvres
A slender finger of sand and dune jutting into the Atlantic, the Pointe de Gâvres rewards the short drive north of Lorient with panoramic views that sweep from the Île de Groix to the Quiberon peninsula on a clear day. It feels genuinely remote, yet it's only 20 minutes from the city centre.
The View and the Walk
Park at the small car park at the tip of the Gâvres peninsula and follow the coastal path around the headland. To the south you see the full breadth of the Rade de Lorient; to the west, open Atlantic rollers break on a wild beach backed by marram grass.
The old fort at the point — Fort de Gâvres, a 19th-century Vauban-style battery — adds a dramatic foreground to photographs, especially at golden hour when the stone turns amber against a pink sky.
When to Go and What to Bring
Sunset visits between June and September are exceptional; the sun drops directly over the ocean and the light on the water is extraordinary. Bring a windproof layer even in summer — the headland is fully exposed.
The village of Gâvres itself has a bakery and a small crêperie, so you can fuel up before the walk. The round trip along the coastal path takes roughly 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.
