Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly
Lorient's flagship museum is a pilgrimage site for sailing fans worldwide, dedicated to the life of Éric Tabarly — France's most celebrated offshore racing skipper. The building itself, shaped like a billowing spinnaker on the waterfront, is a statement before you even step inside.
Inside the Museum
Twelve interactive modules trace the full arc of ocean racing, from the golden age of tall ships to today's foiling trimarans. You can climb into a replica cockpit, feel simulated 40-knot winds on your face and watch archive footage of Tabarly steering Pen Duick across the Atlantic.
The centrepiece is the collection of original Pen Duick racing yachts moored just outside — you can walk the pontoons and get close enough to touch the hulls that rewrote sailing history.
Planning Your Visit
Allow at least two to three hours; families with children will easily fill a half-day thanks to the hands-on simulators and treasure-hunt trail available at the welcome desk.
The museum sits on the Base de Sous-Marins peninsula, so combine your visit with a walk along the waterfront promenade for views across the Rade de Lorient.
