Restaurante Casa Cándido
Operating since 1929 on the Calle Santo Domingo, Casa Cándido is the kind of institution that Lorquinos argue about affectionately — whether the migas are better than their grandmother's, whether the gazpacho jumillano is the finest in the province. It is not a tourist restaurant; it is a family-run dining room where the menu del día changes with the season and the wine list is proudly local.
What to Order
Start with the ajo colorao, a thick paste of roasted red peppers, garlic, potato and salt cod that is specific to this corner of Murcia and almost impossible to find outside it. It arrives with rough country bread and a small jug of local olive oil and is one of those dishes that makes you rethink what simple food can be.
For a main, the migas lorquinas are mandatory — breadcrumbs slow-fried in lard with chorizo, bacon, garlic and grapes, served in an earthenware bowl with a fried egg on top. It sounds heavy and it is, gloriously so, and it explains why Lorquinos historically worked the land.
The Wine and the Atmosphere
The house wine is a young red from the Bullas DO, a small denomination just north of Lorca that produces earthy, garnacha-forward reds at prices that feel almost embarrassingly low. Ask the waiter for a recommendation and they will invariably steer you toward something excellent under €12 a bottle.
The dining room is tiled in the Murcian tradition, loud at lunchtime and full of multigenerational family groups on Sundays. Lunch is the main event here — the kitchen closes at 16:00 and does not reopen for dinner until 20:30.
