Mercado de Abastos de Lorca

Tucked just off the Calle Corredera in the city centre, Lorca's covered Mercado de Abastos is the kind of market where butchers know their customers by name and the vegetable stalls overflow with produce grown in the Guadalentín valley that same morning. It is the most honest window into everyday Lorquino life you will find.

What to Buy

The market's strength is its local produce: pimentón de Murcia, dried ñora peppers strung in vivid red ropes, fresh goat's cheese from nearby farms and enormous heads of garlic braided together. The charcuterie stalls stock embutidos you simply will not find outside the region, including morcilla de verano — a summer blood sausage spiced with rice and pine nuts.

Olives cured with fennel and orange peel are sold loose from giant barrels, and the fishmongers receive Mediterranean catches from Águilas and Mazarrón daily. Arrive before 10:00 to see the full spread before the best cuts disappear.

Bar Culture Inside the Market

Like all great Spanish mercados, Lorca's has a tiny bar wedged between the stalls where market workers and early shoppers prop up the counter with a coffee and a tostada con tomate. It is the perfect place to eavesdrop on the city's morning rhythm and practice your Spanish with people who have zero interest in performing for tourists.

On Friday mornings a small overflow of stalls spills onto the surrounding streets, turning the whole neighbourhood into an impromptu street market with seasonal produce, cheap clothing and household goods.
