The Best Trails from the Lorca Side
The Barranco de Viznaga trail begins near the village of Avilés and follows a seasonal stream bed through a narrow red-rock gorge before climbing into pine forest with views back across the Guadalentín valley. The round trip is around 10 kilometres and takes three to four hours at a comfortable pace; the terrain is rocky but well-marked.
In spring (March to May) the lower slopes are carpeted with wild lavender, rosemary and yellow broom, and the birdsong is extraordinary — Bonelli's eagle, eagle owl and peregrine falcon all nest in the park's rocky crags. Bring binoculars.
The Pozos de la Nieve — Snow Wells
One of the park's most unusual features is its network of 18th-century pozos de la nieve — deep stone wells used to store winter snow that was then sold as a refrigerant to towns across the region before mechanical ice-making existed. Several are accessible on foot from the main park road and are remarkably well preserved.
The largest, the Pozo de la Nieve de la Morra, is a 10-metre-deep circular stone structure that looks like a small fortress from above. It is a genuinely surprising piece of industrial heritage hidden inside a wild mountain landscape and makes for a memorable detour.
