Parco Naturale di Montenero and Santuario di Montenero

A 20-minute bus ride south of Livorno's city centre, the hilltop village of Montenero sits at 300 metres above the Tyrrhenian coast and is home to the Santuario della Madonna di Montenero, Tuscany's most important Marian shrine and the regional patron's church. The surrounding pinewood park offers shaded trails and cliff-edge viewpoints that look straight down to the sea.

The Sanctuary and Its Votive Gallery

The sanctuary itself is a baroque church rebuilt in the 18th century, but its most extraordinary feature is the Cappella dei Voti — a long corridor lined floor to ceiling with thousands of votive offerings left by sailors, fishermen and soldiers over four centuries. Painted tin panels, ship models, crutches and medals crowd every surface in a dense, moving record of gratitude and survival.

The church is a genuine pilgrimage site, not a tourist attraction, and the atmosphere inside is quietly devout. Dress modestly and visit on a weekday morning to avoid the Sunday crowds that arrive by funicular from the coastal road below.

Trails and Viewpoints

The pinewood park surrounding the sanctuary has a network of well-marked footpaths that wind through umbrella pines to a series of limestone promontories overlooking the coast. The best viewpoint — a natural terrace known locally as the Belvedere di Montenero — looks south towards the Argentario peninsula on clear days.

The walk from the funicular upper station to the Belvedere takes about 20 minutes on an easy, mostly flat path. Bring water and a picnic: there are stone tables in the shade of the pines and the view over the sea is exceptional at any time of day.
