The cemetery's most famous resident is Tobias Smollett, the Scottish novelist who died in Livorno in 1771 and whose tomb — a plain obelisk — stands near the entrance. The surrounding graves tell the story of Livorno's extraordinary cosmopolitan history: English wool merchants, Greek Orthodox traders, Dutch sea captains and American diplomats all rest here side by side.
The epitaphs alone are worth an hour of reading. They shift between formal Georgian restraint and florid Victorian grief, and many record deaths at sea or from fever — a reminder of how dangerous Mediterranean trade once was.
The Garden Atmosphere
The cemetery is heavily planted with cypress, palm and magnolia trees, giving it a shaded, almost secret quality that makes it feel entirely removed from the busy city outside its walls. In spring, roses climb over the older tombs and the air smells of jasmine.
It is rarely visited by tourists and almost always quiet, which makes it one of the few places in Livorno where you can sit on a bench, read, and feel genuinely alone with the city's history. Photographers will find extraordinary light filtering through the cypress trees in the late morning.
