Portofino Lighthouse (Faro di Portofino)
Most visitors photograph Portofino's famous harbour from the piazzetta, but the real revelation is the 30-minute walk out to the lighthouse at Punta del Capo — a white-painted faro perched on a rocky promontory where the Ligurian Sea stretches uninterrupted to the horizon in every direction. The panorama at golden hour is simply one of the finest in the Mediterranean.
The Walk to the Lighthouse
The signed trail begins at the southern end of Portofino village and winds through a fragrant mix of Mediterranean scrub, holm oak and ancient olive trees. The path is well-maintained and takes about 25–30 minutes at a gentle pace, passing the 16th-century Castello Brown (worth a stop for its garden views) on the way.
At the lighthouse itself, a broad flat terrace of pink granite drops straight into deep-blue water. On clear days you can see the entire arc of the Ligurian Riviera from the Apuan Alps in the east to the Maritime Alps in the west — bring binoculars.
Timing Your Visit
Arrive in the late afternoon to catch the sun sinking over the sea from the western side of the headland; the warm light turns the water from blue to molten gold in minutes. The trail is open year-round and is free to walk — a welcome contrast to Portofino's notoriously expensive harbour restaurants.
Combine the lighthouse walk with a swim at Paraggi beach (a small, sheltered cove 10 minutes down the eastern slope) for a perfect half-day itinerary that costs almost nothing.
