Cinque Terre Coastal Trail
Strung along a rugged stretch of Ligurian coastline, the five pastel-coloured villages of Cinque Terre are connected by ancient mule paths that reward every step with jaw-dropping sea views. The classic sentiero azzurro (blue trail) links Riomaggiore to Monterosso al Mare through vineyards, lemon groves and clifftop panoramas you will never forget.
Walking the Blue Trail
The most dramatic segment runs between Vernazza and Corniglia, climbing through terraced vineyards where local farmers still tend Sciacchetrà grapes by hand. The path narrows to a stone ledge in places, with the turquoise Ligurian Sea glittering hundreds of metres below — bring sturdy shoes and a full water bottle.
Riomaggiore to Manarola, historically known as the Via dell'Amore, reopened in 2024 after a decade of restoration and is now a smooth, accessible 1.1 km promenade carved directly into the cliff face. Sunset here turns the sea copper-gold and the painted houses amber.
Timing and Crowds
Visit in May or late September to avoid the peak-summer crush; the trail cap system limits daily walkers, so buy your Cinque Terre Card online the night before. The card (€18 for a full day in 2024) covers all trail access and unlimited train hops between villages.
Arriving by first train from La Spezia (6-minute ride) before 9 am means you will have Vernazza's harbour almost to yourself — a rare luxury that transforms the experience entirely.
