Le Clipper – Poissonnerie-Restaurant

At Le Clipper, the menu is written on a chalkboard each morning based solely on what the boats brought in at dawn — a philosophy that makes every meal a small act of trust in the sea. It sits steps from the criée (fish auction) on the Quai Garnier and is the address that local fishermen recommend to their own families.

What to Order

The plateau de fruits de mer is the signature centrepiece: a tiered tower of oysters, langoustines, whelks, palourdes and half a Vendée lobster, served on crushed ice with house-made mayonnaise and brown bread slathered in salted butter. It is built for two but three can share it comfortably as a starter.

The sole meunière is a perennial fixture — local sole pan-fried in clarified butter until the skin crackles, finished with lemon and flat-leaf parsley. Pair it with a glass of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie from the Loire Valley, the classic regional white that cuts through the richness perfectly.

The Atmosphere and Practicalities

The dining room is small — about ten tables — with bare wooden walls, fishing nets overhead and the kind of noise level that suggests everyone is having a good time. Lunch is the main event here; the kitchen closes at 14 h and does not reopen until 19 h.

Reservations are strongly recommended for weekend lunches from May through September. If you cannot get a table, the attached poissonnerie sells the same fish over the counter — buy a bag of palourdes and a baguette and head to the beach for a DIY feast.
