Phare de l'Armandèche

Perched on the rocky headland south of the town centre, the Phare de l'Armandèche is Les Sables-d'Olonne's most dramatic vantage point, offering a sweeping 360-degree panorama that takes in the entire bay, the pine forests of the Forêt d'Olonne and, on clear days, the Île de Noirmoutier shimmering on the horizon. Climbing its 120 steps rewards you with one of the best coastal views in the Pays de

The View from the Top

From the lantern gallery you can trace the full arc of La Grande Plage curving away to the north, the white geometry of the town's villas contrasting with the deep blue of the Atlantic below — it is the kind of view that makes you reach for your camera before you have even caught your breath.

To the south, the wild dunes and pine canopy of the Forêt d'Olonne stretch unbroken, a reminder that this stretch of coast was largely uninhabited marshland before the nineteenth century.

The Lighthouse & Its History

Built in 1820 and standing 42 metres tall, the Armandèche lighthouse was designed to guide fishing fleets and merchant vessels safely around the rocky headland that juts into the Baie de Biscay.

The lighthouse is still fully operational and managed by the French Lighthouse Authority; the interior has been partially opened to visitors in recent years, with informative panels explaining the evolution of Fresnel lens technology.

Getting There

The lighthouse sits at the end of Rue de la Bauduère in the Arago district, about 25 minutes on foot from the town centre along the coastal path — a walk that is scenic in its own right, passing rocky coves and sea-facing benches.

Alternatively, cyclists can reach it easily via the dedicated coastal cycle track that runs south from the promenade; bike hire is available from several outlets near the beach.
