La Grande Plage des Sables-d'Olonne
Stretching nearly three kilometres of pale, firm sand right in front of the town centre, La Grande Plage is the beating heart of Les Sables-d'Olonne and one of the most celebrated beaches on the entire Vendée coast. The wide promenade behind it buzzes with ice-cream sellers, cyclists and sun-worshippers from June through September.
The Beach Itself
The sand here is unusually fine and compact, making it ideal for beach volleyball, sandcastle competitions and long barefoot walks at low tide when the ocean retreats to reveal an almost endless flat expanse.
Lifeguards patrol designated swimming zones throughout summer, and the gentle gradient of the seabed makes it a safe choice for families with young children who want to splash without anxiety.
The Promenade & Surroundings
The seafront Promenade Georges Clemenceau is lined with Belle Époque villas, striped beach tents for hire and a string of cafés where you can sip a citron pressé while watching the Atlantic rollers roll in.
At the southern end, the beach transitions towards the working fishing harbour, giving you a vivid contrast between holiday leisure and the hard-working maritime life that defines this town.
Practical Tips
Arrive before 10 am in July and August to secure a good spot close to the water; by midday the beach fills rapidly and parking on Boulevard Arago becomes a test of patience.
The beach faces due west, so sunsets here are genuinely spectacular — plan an early-evening return even if you spent the afternoon elsewhere in town.
