Mercato Settimanale di Lecce (Via Taranto Market)
Every Monday and Thursday morning, a sprawling street market unfurls along Via Taranto and the surrounding streets south of the historic centre — and it is gloriously, authentically local. Forget tourist trinkets: this is where Leccesi grandmothers squeeze tomatoes, fishmongers shout the catch of the day and fabric sellers unroll bolts of cotton in the early heat.
What to Buy
The food stalls are the heart of it — look for sun-dried fichi mandorlati (almond-stuffed dried figs), local ricotta forte in ceramic pots, enormous braids of scamorza and whatever vegetable is in season from the Salento plains.
Alongside the food, you'll find stalls piled with terracotta pots, inexpensive linen and the woven baskets that Salento craftspeople have made for centuries — practical souvenirs that actually get used.
How to Navigate It
Arrive between 8 am and 10 am for the fullest stalls and the best atmosphere; by noon the vendors begin packing up and the choice thins.
Walk the entire length before buying anything — prices vary stall to stall and a friendly haggle on multiples is perfectly acceptable, especially on non-food goods.
