Basilica di Santa Croce
Santa Croce is the undisputed crown jewel of Lecce's baroque skyline — a facade so intricately carved it looks like stone embroidery. Spend at least twenty minutes outside before you even step through the door.
The Facade Up Close
Every centimetre of the honey-coloured facade is alive with grotesque faces, twisting acanthus leaves, cherubs, and allegorical figures — the collective obsession of sculptors who worked on it from 1549 to 1695. Stand back to the far side of the piazza to take in the full vertical sweep, then inch forward to read the individual stories carved into each panel.
The rose window at the centre is ringed by twelve apostles and flanked by columns whose capitals each tell a different myth. Local pietra leccese limestone is unusually soft when quarried, which is why Leccese craftsmen could achieve a level of detail that would be impossible in harder stone.
Inside the Basilica
The interior is calmer than the exterior promises — a single nave of warm white stone with side chapels whose altarpieces glow in the afternoon light that pours through the clerestory windows. Look for the chapel of Sant'Irene, Lecce's original patron saint, on the left aisle.
Behind the basilica is the attached Palazzo dei Celestini, now the Puglia regional government building, whose courtyard is occasionally open and worth a quick detour for its two-storey loggia of carved arches.
