Pontorson Saturday Market
Just 9 kilometres south of the mount, the small town of Pontorson hosts a lively Saturday morning market that is entirely free of tourist theatre — this is where local farmers, fishermen and fromagers sell to local people. It is the best place near Mont-Saint-Michel to taste the real food culture of the Couesnon valley.
What to Buy & Eat
Stalls spread across the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and spill into the surrounding streets from around 08:00. Look for Isigny-sur-Mer butter and crème fraîche (both carry AOC status), aged Camembert and Livarot wheels, and jars of caramel au beurre salé made by small Norman producers rather than supermarket brands.
The fish stall usually carries coquilles Saint-Jacques (scallops) from the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel between October and May, sold shucked or live in the shell. Pair a bag of them with a baguette from the boulangerie on the corner and you have the makings of a perfect picnic on the riverbank.
Getting There from the Mount
The Keolis bus line 6 connects the mount's mainland car park to Pontorson in about 20 minutes and costs under €3 each way. Alternatively, the flat cycling route along the Couesnon river is a gentle 9-kilometre ride through salt-marsh landscape and takes around 35 minutes on a hire bike.
Pontorson also has a SNCF railway station with connections to Rennes and Caen, making it a useful transport hub if you are arriving without a car. The market wraps up by noon, so combine it with an early start on the mount before the afternoon crowds build.
