Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey
Rising 170 metres above the bay, the Benedictine abbey that crowns Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Europe. Monks have prayed here since 966 AD, and every stone staircase and vaulted cloister tells a thousand years of ambition.
The Abbey Church & Merveille
Climb the Grand Degré staircase and step into the abbey church, where Romanesque solidity gives way to soaring Flamboyant Gothic choir stalls. The nave stretches 80 metres and the effect, especially in morning light filtering through the clerestory windows, is genuinely breathtaking.
La Merveille — the 'Marvel' — is the three-storey Gothic masterpiece on the north face, completed in 1228. Its cloisters are a double row of slender pink-granite columns arranged in a delicate quincunx pattern, considered the finest example of Norman Gothic craftsmanship in existence.
Tides, Crowds & Timing
The bay experiences some of Europe's most dramatic tidal ranges — up to 14 metres — and on a grande marée the sea races in at the speed of a galloping horse, encircling the mount within minutes. Check tide tables at maree.info before you visit and plan your arrival for early morning when coach groups are still absent.
Buying tickets online in advance (€13 adult, free under 26 for EU residents) saves the queue at the causeway ticket office. The last entry is one hour before closing, and evening visits in July–August keep the abbey open until midnight, transforming it into something genuinely otherworldly.
