Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel Nature Reserve
The 250-square-kilometre bay surrounding the mount is a UNESCO World Heritage natural site in its own right — a vast, ever-shifting canvas of tidal channels, salt marshes (herbus) and migratory bird staging grounds that changes character completely with every tide. It is one of the most important wetlands in Western Europe.
Birdwatching on the Herbus
Between August and October the bay hosts tens of thousands of migratory waders — dunlin, knot, grey plover and bar-tailed godwit — using the exposed mudflats as a refuelling stop on their Atlantic flyway. The best observation points are the dyke road (digue) between Beauvoir and the mount, and the salt-marsh trails around Saint-Jean-le-Thomas on the southern shore.
The Maison de la Baie at Vains-Saint-Léonard (free entry) has excellent bilingual displays on the bay's ecology, tide mechanics and the ongoing re-naturalisation project that removed the old causeway dam in 2015 to restore the mount's island status. Rangers here can advise on current birdwatching hotspots.
Salt Marshes & Sheep
The herbus — low-lying salt meadows flooded by the highest tides — are grazed by the famous pré-salé sheep whose meat carries a protected geographical indication. Walking the marked trails through these marshes at low tide, with the abbey reflected in the remaining water channels, is one of the most serene experiences the bay offers.
