Marché des Jacobins
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the vast Place des Jacobins and surrounding streets transform into one of the Pays de la Loire's most vibrant outdoor markets, drawing farmers, cheesemakers, charcutiers and flower sellers from across the Sarthe département. It is the single best place to understand what locals actually eat.
What to Buy
The Sarthe is famous above all for its rillettes — a slow-cooked pork spread richer and coarser than pâté — and you'll find at least a dozen producers here, each insisting theirs is the authentic version. Buy a small pot from two or three stalls and conduct your own tasting back at your accommodation.
Local goat's cheeses from the Vallée du Loir, seasonal vegetables from the Sarthe plain, live poultry, wild mushrooms in autumn and strawberries from the Sablé-sur-Sarthe area in June are all worth seeking out.
The Experience
The Saturday market is significantly larger than Wednesday's, spilling across the Jacobins square and down towards the old town walls. Arrive before 9 h to see the stalls at their fullest and to beat the lunch-hour crowds.
Street food vendors set up along the edges — look for the galette-saucisse stand (a Breton-influenced sausage wrapped in a buckwheat crêpe) and the roving oyster seller who shucks to order with a squeeze of lemon for around €2 each.
Practical Notes
The market winds down sharply after 13 h and many of the best producers sell out of signature items by noon, so an early start is genuinely rewarded.
The covered Halles du Miroir nearby on Rue des Minimes operates Tuesday to Sunday and is worth a detour for its permanent cheese, charcuterie and wine merchants on days when the outdoor market isn't running.
