La Cité Plantagenêt (Vieux-Mans)
Tucked behind Roman walls that still stand three metres thick, the Vieux-Mans quarter is one of France's best-preserved medieval city centres — a labyrinth of half-timbered houses, Renaissance mansions and cobbled lanes that film crews regularly mistake for a ready-made period set. It predates the race by about a thousand years.
The Roman Walls & Cathedral
The Gallo-Roman walls encircling the old city date from the 3rd and 4th centuries and are decorated with a striking geometric pattern of pink and white stone — walk the full perimeter path along the river Sarthe side for the best views and the fewest crowds.
The Cathédrale Saint-Julien du Mans anchors the quarter with a Romanesque nave begun in the 11th century and a soaring Gothic choir added two centuries later. The stained glass inside — some panels dating to the 12th century — rivals anything in Chartres.
Renaissance Mansions & Hidden Courtyards
The Grande-Rue and Rue de la Reine-Bérengère are lined with 15th- and 16th-century timber-framed houses whose upper floors lean so far over the street they nearly touch. Look for the Maison de la Reine Bérengère, now a local history museum, whose carved facade is among the finest in the Sarthe.
Duck into any open courtyard and you'll find hidden gardens, stone staircases and the occasional sculptor's studio — the quarter has attracted artisans and artists for decades, and many open their workshops on summer Saturday afternoons.
Evening in the Old Town
As the day-trippers thin out, the Place Saint-Pierre fills with locals at the terrace restaurants — order a carafe of local Jasnières white wine and a plate of rillettes du Mans and watch the cathedral's floodlit towers turn gold.
The quarter is compact enough to explore thoroughly in two hours, but charming enough that most visitors end up staying for dinner.
