Marché de Laval — Place du 11 Novembre
Every Saturday morning the heart of Laval transforms into one of the liveliest covered and open-air markets in the Mayenne department, drawing farmers from across the bocage with produce that genuinely reflects the season. Arrive before 9 am if you want first pick of the ripe Reinette apples, farmhouse Camembert-style cheeses from local dairies, and bunches of just-cut dahlias.
What to buy and where to look
The covered halles shelter the cheese, charcuterie and fish stalls — seek out the andouillette de Laval, a local pork sausage with a distinctive coarse texture that charcutiers here have been making for centuries. Pair it with a wedge of pain de campagne from the boulangerie stalls just outside.
Seasonal vegetables dominate the outdoor rows: white asparagus in April and May, mirabelle plums in August, celeriac and butternut squash through autumn. Prices are noticeably lower than in tourist-heavy Loire Valley towns further south.
The social side of the market
By 10 am the café terraces ringing the square fill with locals nursing café crèmes and dissecting their morning haul. Pull up a chair at one of the brasseries on the square's western edge and you have a front-row seat to the whole spectacle.
A smaller Wednesday morning market runs on the same square with fewer stalls but a more relaxed, neighbourhood feel — good if you prefer to browse without the weekend crowds.
