Le Capucin Gourmand

Tucked into a narrow street in the old town, Le Capucin Gourmand has been serving honest, ingredient-led cooking rooted in Mayenne produce for years. It is the kind of place where the set lunch menu changes daily according to what arrived that morning from local farms and the Mayenne river.

What to Order

The signature starter is a warm rillettes gratin — a generous crock of shredded pork slow-cooked in its own fat, topped with breadcrumbs and briefly grilled until golden. It arrives with cornichons and thick slices of sourdough and is exactly as good as it sounds.

For a main, the pike-perch (sandre) from the Mayenne river is a recurring menu item when in season — pan-fried with beurre blanc and served with local vegetables. The kitchen treats its fish with the same respect as its meat, which is rare in an inland bistro.

Desserts lean toward classic French comfort: tarte Tatin, île flottante, and a rotating cheese board featuring at least two Mayenne goat's cheeses.

The Atmosphere

The dining room is small — perhaps 30 covers — with exposed stone walls, mismatched wooden chairs, and a blackboard menu that changes so frequently it is barely worth photographing before you sit down. The pace is unhurried and the service is genuinely warm.

Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings; the restaurant fills quickly with locals, which is always the most reliable endorsement a restaurant can have.
