Marché de Laval — Place du 11 Novembre
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the wide esplanade of Place du 11 Novembre fills with over 200 stalls selling Mayenne cheeses, rillettes, cider, and seasonal vegetables straight from local farms. It is the social heartbeat of the city and the most honest introduction to the local larder.
What to Buy & Taste
Look for Craon goat's cheese, farmhouse rillettes du Mans, and the region's distinctive andouille sausage — all sold by producers who drove in that morning. The cheese stalls alone justify an early alarm.
The fruit and vegetable section mirrors the seasons perfectly: asparagus and strawberries in spring, melons and tomatoes in summer, ceps and squash in autumn. Prices are noticeably lower than supermarket equivalents and the quality is incomparably better.
Several stalls sell warm galettes and crêpes to eat on the spot, and a travelling coffee van parks near the central fountain — making a leisurely breakfast circuit the ideal way to start a market morning.
The Atmosphere & Surroundings
The market spills beyond the main square into adjacent streets, where clothing, flowers, and bric-à-brac vendors add colour and noise. Locals greet stallholders by name, and the hum of conversation in the Mayennais accent is part of the experience.
After shopping, the old town's café terraces along Rue des Déportés are perfect for a post-market coffee. The whole area feels genuinely lived-in rather than curated for tourists.
