La Belle Étoile Restaurant
Sitting almost on the waterline at the western end of La Roque-Gageac's quay, La Belle Étoile is the village's most atmospheric restaurant — a terrace shaded by plane trees, the Dordogne lapping a few metres away and a kitchen that takes regional cooking seriously without turning it into a museum piece.
What to Order
The menu leans hard into Périgord classics done with care: duck confit with sarladaise potatoes cooked in rendered duck fat, pan-seared foie gras with a Monbazillac reduction, and a walnut cake with crème anglaise that is far better than it sounds on paper.
The cheese course is worth adding — local Cabécou de Rocamadour (a small, nutty goat's cheese from just south of the Dordogne) appears regularly and pairs beautifully with a glass of Bergerac Sec.
Fish from the Dordogne itself sometimes features as a daily special; the écrevisses (crayfish) gratin, when available, is a genuine local rarity worth ordering immediately.
Booking and Atmosphere
The terrace fills by 12:30 pm on summer lunches — book at least two days ahead for a riverside table in July and August. The interior stone dining room is lovely in cooler months, with an open fireplace that gets lit from October.
Wine service is knowledgeable; ask for a recommendation from the Bergerac appellation rather than defaulting to Bordeaux — the Château Tour des Gendres Bergerac Blanc is a superb local choice at a fair price.
