La Belle Étoile Restaurant
Perched on the quayside of La Roque-Gageac with the cliff face as its backdrop and the Dordogne lapping a few metres from the terrace, La Belle Étoile is the village's most celebrated restaurant — a place where Périgord classics like duck confit with sarladaise potatoes and walnut tart are executed with genuine care rather than tourist-trade indifference. What to Order
The set menus (typically three courses at lunch, four at dinner) lean heavily on Périgord's holy trinity of duck, foie gras and walnut, but the kitchen sources locally and changes dishes with the seasons — cèpe risotto appears in autumn, asparagus from the Périgord Blanc in spring.
Sarladaise potatoes — sliced and slow-cooked in duck fat with garlic and parsley — are the region's most iconic side dish and La Belle Étoile's version is definitive: crisp on the outside, yielding within, unashamedly rich.
The wine list leans on Bergerac and Cahors appellations; ask the sommelier for a Château de Tiregand Pécharmant rouge, a structured Bergerac red that stands up beautifully to duck.
Booking and Atmosphere
The restaurant is attached to a small hotel of the same name and tables fill weeks ahead in July and August — book online at least a fortnight before your visit and specifically request a terrace seat facing the river.
Lunch is the better-value option: a two-course formule with a glass of local wine comes in well under €30 and the afternoon light on the water is arguably more beautiful than the evening.
The interior dining room is carved partly into the cliff itself, with rough limestone walls and low vaulted ceilings that feel authentically medieval — a fine wet-weather alternative to the terrace.
