Mercato Civico di La Maddalena
Tucked just off Piazza Umberto I in the heart of La Maddalena town, the Mercato Civico is where islanders have bought their daily provisions for generations. Arrive before 9 am and you'll find stalls piled with Sardinian pecorino at various stages of ageing, sun-dried bottarga, local honey and whatever the fishing boats brought in at dawn.
What to Buy
The bottarga di muggine — cured grey mullet roe — sold here is the real Sardinian article, intensely savoury and amber-coloured. Buy a vacuum-packed piece to take home and grate it over pasta like the locals do.
Look for the small-batch mirto liqueur made from myrtle berries foraged on Caprera; the deep-purple bottles make a far more authentic souvenir than anything sold in the port-side tourist shops. Rounds of pecorino sardo range from fresh and milky to aged and sharp — vendors will let you taste before you buy.
The Market Atmosphere
The covered hall has the pleasantly worn feel of a place that has never tried to be picturesque — fishmongers argue cheerfully with regulars, espresso cups clatter at the tiny bar inside, and the smell of fresh bread from the adjacent forno drifts through the whole building.
It is also genuinely cheap by Italian standards: a generous wedge of aged pecorino, a jar of local honey and a bottle of mirto will cost less than a round of aperitivo at a harbour bar.
