Trattoria Il Giardinetto
On a small island with serious seafood credentials, Il Giardinetto on Via La Marmora has been the reliable, unfussy benchmark for decades — the kind of place where the tablecloths are paper, the wine comes in a ceramic jug and the aragosta alla catalana arrives looking like a still-life painting.
What to order
The signature dish is spaghetti all'aragosta, made with local spiny lobster from the Bocche di Bonifacio and a tomato sauce so clean it tastes like the sea distilled. The pasta is cooked properly al dente and the portion is generous without being theatrical.
Start with a plate of mixed antipasti di mare — octopus salad, marinated anchovies, bottarga shavings on bread — and you'll already have eaten better than in most places charging three times the price.
In summer, the grilled whole sea bass with a drizzle of local olive oil and a wedge of lemon is the kind of dish that makes complicated cooking feel like a waste of everyone's time.
The room and the regulars
The dining room spills into a small courtyard shaded by a pergola of climbing plants — the 'giardinetto' (little garden) of the name. In July and August reserve a table outside at least a day ahead; locals compete for the same spots.
The family that runs it has been doing so for over thirty years; the grandmother still appears occasionally to check on the kitchen, which is always a reassuring sign.
Practical tips
Lunch is the main event here — the kitchen closes at 2:30 pm sharp and the best dishes sell out. Dinner service is quieter and slightly more relaxed.
The house Vermentino di Gallura, served cold in a ceramic jug, is the correct pairing for everything on the menu and costs almost nothing extra.
