Parque Natural Sierra de San Pedro
Stretching west of Jerez de los Caballeros towards the Portuguese border, the Sierra de San Pedro natural park is one of the last great wilderness corridors in western Europe — a vast mosaic of cork-oak forest, granite outcrops and river valleys that shelters Iberian lynx, black storks and imperial eagles within easy reach of the town.
Wildlife and walking routes
The park's most accessible entry point from Jerez de los Caballeros is the GR-14 long-distance trail, which passes through the park's core zone and can be walked in sections as day hikes. The stretch between the town and the Río Ardila valley — about 12 km one way — passes through classic dehesa before climbing into denser cork-oak forest where the silence is profound and the birdlife extraordinary.
Black vultures and griffon vultures are almost guaranteed overhead; patient observers in the early morning may spot black storks feeding along the river. The Iberian lynx population here is part of a successful reintroduction programme — sightings are rare but not impossible, especially at dusk near the river margins. A local guide significantly increases your chances.
Cork harvest and seasonal highlights
If you visit between June and August in years when the harvest cycle aligns, you may witness the traditional cork stripping — workers with long-handled axes peeling the bark from trees in a process unchanged for centuries. The exposed wood is a vivid terracotta orange that fades to grey over the following months. It is one of the most photogenic agricultural sights in Spain.
Spring (March to May) is the peak season for wildflowers — the meadows beneath the oaks fill with Lusitanian daffodils, wild peonies and a dozen orchid species. Autumn brings a different palette: golden grasses, mushroom foragers and the rutting calls of red deer echoing through the granite valleys.
