Mirador del Templete
A short walk from the castle walls, this small belvedere with its neoclassical stone tempietto offers arguably the finest unobstructed view over the surrounding countryside — a vast mosaic of cork oak, olive grove, and golden pasture stretching to the horizon. At sunset the light turns everything the colour of warm honey, and the silence is absolute.
The best angle in town
The Templete itself is a modest 19th-century stone pavilion, but its position on the northwestern edge of the old town hill means nothing interrupts the view towards the Sierra Morena and the Portuguese border beyond. On exceptionally clear days — most common in autumn after the first rains — you can make out the distant ridgeline of the Serra de São Mamede in Portugal.
A handful of stone benches face the view, making this a favourite spot for locals in the early evening. Bring a bottle of local Ribera del Guadiana wine and settle in: this is the kind of viewpoint that travel magazines dream about but rarely find.
Getting there and combining visits
The mirador sits just a few minutes' walk north of the castle entrance along the old town walls. It makes a natural end-point for a loop that starts at Plaza de España, climbs to the castle, and returns via the viewpoint — a circuit of about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.
Spring and autumn are the most rewarding seasons: spring brings wildflowers to the dehesa below, while autumn colours the oak canopy in russet and gold. Summer visits are best reserved for the last hour before sunset when the heat relents.
