Museo Provincial de Jaén
Nowhere on earth holds a denser collection of ancient Iberian stone sculpture than this quietly magnificent provincial museum. The carved warriors and limestone ladies unearthed at Cerrillo Blanco will stop you cold in your tracks.
The Iberian Sculpture Rooms
The ground floor dedicates an entire wing to the extraordinary finds from Porcuna, where more than 150 fragments of life-size Iberian warriors, athletes and mythological beasts were discovered in a ritual deposit dating to the 5th century BC.
Each piece is lit dramatically against pale walls, giving the carved limestone faces an almost living quality. Spend at least an hour here — the detail in the musculature and clothing rivals anything in the Greco-Roman world.
Roman Mosaics and Upper Floors
Climb to the upper galleries for a superb collection of Roman mosaics lifted from local villas, including a vivid hunting scene from the 3rd century AD that still blazes with terracotta and cobalt tesserae.
The museum building itself, a converted 16th-century Renaissance palace, is worth admiring: its arcaded courtyard with carved stone medallions is one of the most elegant in Jaén.
Practical Visit Tips
The museum sits on Paseo de la Estación, a ten-minute walk from the cathedral. It is almost always uncrowded, even in high summer, making it a perfect midday retreat from the heat.
