Catedral de Jaén & the Holy Face
Jaén's cathedral is one of the most harmonious Renaissance buildings in all of Spain, its honey-gold limestone façade rising with quiet authority above the Plaza de Santa María. Inside, it guards one of Christianity's most venerated relics — the Veil of Veronica, said to bear the imprint of Christ's face.
The Architecture
Designed by Andrés de Vandelvira in the 16th century and completed over 200 years, the cathedral achieves a rare unity of style. The twin towers, the deep pilastered portico and the soaring nave all speak the same classical language, making it a textbook example of Spanish Renaissance at its most confident.
Walk around the entire exterior before going in — the north portal on Calle Maestra is far less visited than the main façade yet equally ornate, with intricate relief carvings of saints and angels that reward close inspection.
The Holy Face & the Crypt
Every Friday at 11:30 the cathedral chapter performs the Muestra del Santo Rostro, a ceremony in which the silver reliquary is opened and the faithful file past the linen cloth. Whether you are religious or not, the ritual atmosphere — incense, Gregorian chant, candlelight — is profoundly moving.
The underground crypt, accessible on the standard visit, contains the tombs of several bishops and a small treasury of medieval goldsmithery including a 15th-century processional cross that is among the finest in Andalusia.
