Catedral de la Asunción de Jaén

Jaén's cathedral is one of the purest and most imposing Renaissance buildings in all of Spain, designed by Andrés de Vandelvira in the 16th century and still dominating the city skyline with effortless authority. Inside, the scale is humbling and the light extraordinary.

Vandelvira's Soaring Interior

Step through the main portal on Plaza de Santa María and the nave opens up like a canyon of pale sandstone, its barrel vaults and Corinthian pilasters rising 30 metres above the marble floor. The proportions are so perfectly balanced that the space feels simultaneously vast and intimate.

Don't miss the sacristy, also by Vandelvira, which many architectural historians consider his finest single room — a coffered barrel vault supported by slender columns, flooded with warm southern light through tall windows.

The Holy Face Relic and Museum

The cathedral houses the Reliquia del Santo Rostro, a piece of linen venerated since medieval times as one of the cloths used to wipe Christ's face on the road to Calvary. It is displayed every Friday in a solemn ceremony that draws local worshippers and curious visitors alike.

The attached museum contains Flemish paintings, embroidered vestments and a small but fine collection of Renaissance silverwork. The rooftop terrace accessed via the museum offers a privileged close-up of the twin towers and a sweeping view over the old city.

The Façade and Plaza

The western façade, flanked by two 17th-century towers added after Vandelvira's death, is best seen in the late afternoon when the sandstone turns a deep amber gold. The broad Plaza de Santa María in front, with its Renaissance fountain, is one of the most photogenic urban spaces in Andalusia.

Café tables spill out around the plaza in the evenings — order a cold Cruzcampo and simply sit and look. Few cathedral squares in Spain are this unhurried.
