Mercado Municipal de Jaca & Tapas on Calle Mayor
Jaca punches well above its size when it comes to food culture, and the twin rituals of a market browse followed by a pintxo crawl along Calle Mayor are the best way to taste the Pyrenean larder. Think truffle-laced local cheeses, wild boar charcuterie and glasses of cold Somontano wine.
The market: small but serious
The Mercado Municipal sits just off Plaza de la Catedral and opens Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. Stalls pile high with Hecho valley cheeses, Ansó lamb, freshly foraged mushrooms in autumn and the prized black truffles (Tuber melanosporum) that grow in the limestone hills nearby.
Arrive before 10:00 to catch the best produce and to chat with vendors who have been supplying Jaca's restaurants for decades. A wedge of Queso del Pirineo and a handful of dried figs makes the perfect trail snack for an afternoon hike.
Pintxo crawl along Calle Mayor
After 19:00 the pedestrianised Calle Mayor comes alive as locals spill out of bars balancing small plates of jamón, grilled prawn brochettes and the local speciality longaniza de Graus sausage on crusty bread. Bar El Arco and La Tasca de Ana are perennial favourites with both residents and in-the-know visitors.
Budget roughly €2–3 per pintxo and pair everything with a chilled glass of Viñas del Vero Chardonnay from the nearby Somontano DO. The whole street buzzes with an easy, unhurried energy that is quintessentially Aragonese.
