Rapitán Hill & Fort Rapitán Viewpoint
A 40-minute walk north of Jaca's old town brings you to the ruins of Fort Rapitán, a 19th-century hilltop fortification that rewards the climb with arguably the finest 360-degree panorama in the central Aragonese Pyrenees. The view sweeps from the Canal de Berdún valley all the way to the jagged silhouette of Collarada peak.
The walk up and what you'll see
Follow the signposted path from the northern edge of town along the Río Gas gorge, where the trail climbs steeply through fragrant pine and oak scrub. The ruins of the fort emerge suddenly at the crest, their crumbling brick walls framing postcard views in every direction.
To the south the terracotta rooftops and Romanesque tower of Jaca's cathedral are laid out like a map. To the north the snow-streaked ridgeline of the Pyrenees — including the distinctive pyramid of Pico Collarada (2,886 m) — fills the entire horizon on a clear day.
Best times and practical notes
Sunrise visits between May and October are magical: the valley fills with mist while the peaks catch the first pink light. Bring a headtorch if you plan to arrive before dawn, as the path is unlit and rocky in places.
The trail is entirely free and takes about 1.5 hours return at a relaxed pace. Dogs are welcome and the path is popular with local runners on weekend mornings — a sure sign it's worth the effort.
