Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara
Less than an hour's drive south of Huesca, the Sierra de Guara protects a labyrinth of limestone gorges, pre-Romanesque hermitages and crystal-clear rivers that make it one of the most spectacular natural parks in Spain — and the undisputed canyoning capital of Europe. Even non-adventurers will be stunned by the scenery.
Canyoning and Adventure
The Vero, Alcanadre and Mascún river canyons cut through the limestone plateau in dramatic slot gorges up to 300 metres deep. Guided canyoning descents — involving rappelling, swimming and jumping — are available for all levels from the villages of Rodellar, Bierge and Alquézar, with outfitters operating from April through October.
Alquézar, the park's most visited village, is a perfectly preserved medieval settlement perched above the Vero canyon with a collegiate church that has views down into the gorge. It's an easy day trip from Huesca and justifiably one of the 'most beautiful villages in Spain' (Pueblos más Bonitos de España member).
Hiking and Wildlife
Non-canyoners can follow the well-marked Ruta del Río Vero trail from Alquézar, a flat riverside walk through the lower gorge past Paleolithic cave paintings at Mallata and Barfaluy — some of the finest prehistoric rock art in Aragon, and freely accessible.
Griffon vultures are a constant presence overhead; the park hosts one of Europe's densest populations. In spring, Egyptian vultures and eagle owls nest in the cliff faces, making this outstanding territory for birdwatchers.
